The Last 20, A Teacher Poem (and a bit of comic relief)
I wrote this for friend who is an elementary school teacher. Near the end of the last few school years, she has sounded so excited about summer vacation, just like when we were kids! I am amazed at her sacrifices as a teacher so wrote this for her with tongue in cheek.
Oh! To count the days!
There is much sun to be soaked
And joy to find in play!
Ah! The jokes that will be poked!
They are certain to be made,
As the light lengthens into the summer haze.
But wait! There are 20 more!
Whoa! If only I had remembered!
Well, you know we keep score.
Can I make it without a child dismembered?
They scream, “The last days are such a bore!”
Must I see them again in September?
It is almost over.
The relief is in sight.
The 20 days keeps me sober
While I dream of summer delight.
I will run in fields of clover
And walk the moon-lit beach late at night.
The summer will be refreshing
A respite to recharge my soul,
The teacher in me refueling
Every day that I rest my core.
I’ll return to dispatch schooling
Ever ready to offer more!
